MRS. COMFORT NYAMEBA OPOKU
Mrs. Comfort Nyameba Opoku born 15th December 1958 is a Ghanaian Medical Laboratory Scientist who is professionally affiliated with Women in Science Association, Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) and served as the Head of Laboratory, Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) for eight years from 2010 to 2018 and Regional Biomedical Scientist, Greater Accra from the year 2009 to 2018.
Until her retirement in 2018 she served as the Head of Department for Tema General Hospital 2002, Technical Advisor and Lecturer at Adom Medical Laboratory School in 2005. Her activeness in service and as a team player earned her the opportunity to triple roles in 2016 as a Chairperson for Quality Assurance team for Tema General Hospital, Deputy Chief Biomedical Scientist (as Haematologist) and Team Leader for the Experts responsible for writing Developed Guidelines on Malaria Diagnosis for Ghana.
Medical Laboratory Scientist, Mrs. Comfort Nyameba Opoku is married woman with four children who had her tertiary education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi with Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences from 1979 to 1984. With Post Graduate Diploma in Biological Sciences from the University of Ulster, Coleraine, North Ireland 1992 to 1993, she pursued Master of Science in Haematology from the University of Westminster, United Kingdom and gained her qualifications in 2005.
She served the first year of her mandatory National Service from 1985 to 1986 at KNUST hospital (formerly UST). In her second year national service from 1986 to 1987, she worked at the Microbiology Department of UST, Medical School at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where she later worked as a Biologist from 1987 to 1992.
MLS Comfort Nyameba who has patients at heart as an indefatigable woman in the field of practice 2021 partook in the Africa Institute of HealthCare Quality Safety & Accreditation (AFIHQSA), served as a Clinical Diagnostic Consultant USP, Ghana and Project Management at the University of Washington, USA.
Mrs. Comfort Nyameba Opoku through her engagement in corrective supervision of health facilities across Ghana and other African countries including Kenya, have impacted malaria diagnosis positively. Since 2010, she has taken part in WHO Malaria Microscopy Accreditation Program in Nairobi, Kenya. She also engaged herself throughout 2011 in an International Epidemiology course on disease surveillance – Emory University, CDC Atlanta, USA.
In 2012, she was a Facilitator for Malaria Microscopy Training in Ghana and Regional Training of Laboratory Staff in malaria parasite count in 2013 the same year she gained her qualification from the Ghana Institute of Management & Public Administration in Health Administration Management (HAM).
As an expert in malaria microscopy in Africa, she coordinated the WHO Malaria Microscopy Accreditation Program in Nairobi, Kenya in 2015 & 2016.
Madam Comfort Nyameba Opoku as an astute leader and a mother, currently holds the position as a Senior Clinical Quality Manager, Clinical Diagnosis, United States Pharmacopeia Ghana/USA.
From 2018 up to date, her servant leadership has granted her the Treasurer & Council Member position of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Scientists.
In her professional experience from 2018 to 2021 as Clinical Laboratory Diagnostic Consultant of the USP, was responsible to;
• Lead technical training for Clinical Diagnostic Laboratories using SLMTA framework in three laboratories across Ghana and Nigeria. During the outbreak of COVID-19, training was done virtually in clinical chemistry, haematology, and microbiology related to HIV, Malaria and TB.
• Work with USP staff in Ghana and Nigeria.
• Train and develop templates for Clinical Laboratory Technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and review for ABC.
• Mentorship with Ghana and Nigeria Field Officers Technical Team to expand their technical competencies in clinical laboratory diagnosis.
• Support USP team in Ghana and Nigeria implementation of clinical laboratory Quality Management System.
From 2010 to 2018 as the Chief and Regional Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) for Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH), she served in various responsibilities but few includes; Technical Clinical Laboratory advisor to the Regional Director of Health Services, supervising all hospital laboratories (in the region, districts, and polyclinics), train and support to establish Quality Assurance Systems. In her capacity, she trained all doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, technicians and assistants in laboratory protocols in HIV & Malaria.
As a learned woman in science, one of her research work looked at Immunocytochemical identification of B and T cells disorders and cytochemical staining of Granulocytes and monocytes (Unpublished Post Graduate Diploma thesis 1993). The thesis essentially researched into identifying leukaemia using APAAP technique. This method superseded the French, American and British (FAB) classification which is based on morphological features. The method is advantageous over conventional techniques and could be employed in developing countries where the use of sophisticated equipment is limited.
Over the years, she attended workshops including those that looked at Quality Assurance in Haematology, Planning and Designing of laboratory logistics forms and inventory Control cards, and Quality assurance on TB.
Professionally, she conducted several academic kinds of research which include; Malaria drug efficacy studies by the National Malaria Control Programme and NOGUCHI Research Center, Legon, ongoing & Malaria Prevalence Studies by NOGUCHI, Legon, Accra from 2012 to 2018. From 2013 to 2014, she conducted Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) surveillance among some hospitals in Ghana by the University of Ghana Medical School.
Mrs. Comfort Nyameba Opoku has contributed significantly to the success, growth and development of the profession hence deserves to be honored.
